INSTRUCTORS
Susan Pascale-Frechette, Director
Entering her 21st year as a swim instructor, Susan has taught thousands of Rhode Islanders to swim through various local swim programs. Her experience, knowledge, and positive encouragement has allowed many children enjoy a career in swimming. Before becoming director of Pods, Susan was an entry level swim coach for the Bay & Ocean State Squids from 1996-2007. During that time she attended several ASCA clinics and received two “New England Age Group Coach of the Year” awards from New England Swimming. Her program was the starting point for many top New England swimmers and national level swimmers. In 2007, she joined the United States Swim School Association and in 2008 became certified in their infant/toddler program. Susan is a 1997 graduate of the University of Rhode Island, where she received her BS in Dental Hygiene. She currently is a registered dental hygienist and has been practicing at the office of Drs. Rubinstein & Ducoff in Providence, RI for the past 13 years. She and her husband Marc reside in Barrington with their daughter Jillian and son Evan.
Jamie Pascale, Program Manager
Entering her 18th year as a swim instructor, Jamie has had exceptional success. Her creativity, enthusiasm, and knowledge has allowed children to flourish in their swimming careers. Prior to being a Pods staff member, Jamie was a private swim instructor for 17 years and an entry level swim coach for the Bay and Ocean State Squids from 1999 to 2007. Jamie worked with the Cuttlefish and pods programs which were the starting point for many top New England Swimmers’. The knowledge that she attained from her coaching experience at Squids has proven to be an invaluable asset to the development of children as swimmer’s and athletes. She shares her knowledge with the Pods staff to allow the program to continue with this excellence. In 2008 Jamie became certified in the United States Swim School Infant/Toddler Program. She also brings with her 15 years of a competitive swimming background.
Erin Briskie, Head Instructor
Erin Started swimming competitively for City of Richardson Swim Team in Dallas, TX, and continued her swimming career on a collegiate level at Texas A&M. During her 4 years at Texas A&M Erin specialized in Breaststroke and I.M. She Competed in NCAA 3 years in a row, Qualified for olympic trials in 2004 and 2008, and was a team Captain. Erin also taught private swim lessons, and was a Texas A&M swim camp counselor for 4 years. Erin attributes her success in the pool to the skills and ethics instilled by former coaches. Erin looks to her previous experiences to help children recognize their own hidden potential, and boost confidence. Erin is entering her 2nd year as a pods staff instructor.
Karen Brown Ballou, Head Instructor
Karen has been an educator for the past 20 years. She is a nanny/ teacher and brings her knowledge of early childhood development as well as a love for the water and making children feel comfortable in the water. Karen is entering her 2nd year as a Pods staff instructor and recently was certified in the United States Swim School Infant/Toddler Program.She lives in Providence with her husband, Jason and their 2 boys, Garrett and Brandon, both who thoroughly enjoy the pods program!
Mike Connors, Head Instructor
Mike was an age group swimmer for the Seekonk Dolphins under the direction of Ellis Mayers, during the 1980’s. Mike has joined the Pods staff because he would like to give back to the community of Seekonk in which he grew up in. Under the direction of Ellis Mayers, Mike learned the value of learning to swim at a young age. He is married and has two sons Ben and Ryan both four. He is looking forward to working with the Pods program this season.
Kirby Marshall, Head Instructor
Kirby has been swimming since the age of 3. Competing in her first USS swim meet at the age of 4. She was a member of the Cumberland Area Swim Team and at 8 years old moved over to the the Bruin Swim Team, which then became the Ocean State Squids. Her coaching experience began 5 years ago at Abbott Run Valley Club and the Attleboro YMCA swim team. She graduated from Salve Regina University in 2009 and is currently enrolled in a Nursing program in Providence. She looks forward to working with and being a part of the pods program.
Katie Johnson, Head Instructor
Katelyn is entering her 3rd year as a Pods staff instructor. She has been swimming competitively since the age of 7 for the Grist Mill Swim Club and Seacoast Swimming Association.Katie has competed in swim meets ranging from Massachusetts State swimming championships to Florida Sectionals. Katie enjoys teaching children the skills that have allowed her to enjoy the sport of swimming.
Nathan Lachance, Head Instructor
Nathan is entering his 3rd year as a Pods staff instructor. He began his swimming career at the age of 6 as a member of Susan and Jamie’s cuttlefish program at Squids. He is currently swimming for Seacoast Swimming Association. Nathan has proven to be an invaluable asset to the Pods program. From knowledge he attained under the direction of Squids, Nathan is able to convey the basics of the all the strokes to the Pods swimmer’s today.
Fay Laborio, Head Instructor
Fay is entering her 4th year teaching swim lessons for Pods swimming. She loves working with children. Fay's patience and enthusiasm has allowed hundred's of children learn to be comfortable and enjoy the water.
